Automation Technician


Kai USA, the manufacturer of Kershaw Knives and Zero Tolerance Knives in Tualatin, Oregon, continues to grow and has an immediate need for an Automation Technician.


Essential functions/duties:

  • Works with management to identify and implement continuous improvement projects with the goal of reducing finished goods cost, decreasing labour content and improving quality
  • Designs and implements upgrades to machinery or designs new process-specific equipment including mechanical and electrical design
  • Specifies and procures off-the-shelf parts, makes modifications to existing parts, machines new parts in-house or works with outside contractors to manufacture custom parts
  • Installs machinery, setup, training and process documentation as well as ongoing improvement and maintenance
  • Be highly cross-functional; for example, the Automation Technician will design a project in CAD, work in the machine shop making parts, assemble parts, and test equipment
  • Design, engineer, maintain, and improve automated testing framework using automation tools to address areas such as database impacts, software scenarios, regression testing, negative testing, error or bug retests, or usability in preparation for implementation 
  • Perform other job duties as assigned

Requirements / Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor in Science in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering, plus one to three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge and experience in repair and troubleshooting of large heavy mechanical machinery
  • Experience operating a knee mill and engine lathe required; CNC experience a plus
  • Experience with SolidWorks required; experience with Fusion 360 a plus
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • 2+ years experience in machine design
  • 5-10 years experience in metal working and/or consumer goods manufacturing
  • Experience specifying, setting up and maintaining PLCs, robotics, pneumatic controls, hydraulics, servo and stepper motors, VFDs and other industrial controls
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and presentation skills, in English, at all levels
  • High energy and motivation to thrive in a fast paced manufacturing environment

Pay D.O.E., $20-30 per hour.
